The Patron Saint Festival of Our City: La Tamborrada
On January 20th, the vibrant heartbeat of San Sebastián will echo through the streets as drums commemorate a tradition dating back to 1597. That year, a plague struck Pasajes de San Pedro, prompting the townspeople of San Sebastián to make a solemn pilgrimage to the church of their patron saint, seeking his protection. When the epidemic subsided, they made a vow: to proclaim Saint Sebastian as their patron and honor his feast day each year.
Through the centuries, this tradition has thrived, blending its religious origins with the spirited Tamborrada. Thought to have originated as part of the Donostian Carnival, the Tamborrada fused with the feast day celebrations, giving rise to a unique festival filled with the rhythmic sounds of drums and barrels.

Festivities kick off on January 19th, San Sebastián Eve, when excitement fills the air. Friends and families gather for dinner, eagerly welcoming the celebration. At the Hotel de Londres y de Inglaterra, we invite you to begin this momentous occasion with an exceptional dining experience. Our four-course menu, crafted with the finest local ingredients and traditional recipes, promises an unforgettable evening steeped in Donostian flavor.
At midnight, the San Sebastián flag is raised in Plaza de la Constitución, heralding 24 hours of jubilant celebration. Marches resound through the streets, mingling with laughter, tears, and heartfelt pride for the city’s patron saint.
The festivities continue at noon with the children’s Tamborrada parade, bringing youthful joy and music to the streets. Throughout the day, various groups and companies march, filling the city with rhythm, color, and tradition.
At midday, delight your palate with an exquisite four-course menu while admiring the unparalleled views of the majestic La Concha Bay. An unforgettable experience that combines exceptional flavors, a vibrant atmosphere, and the unique charm of one of San Sebastián’s most iconic locations.
This year, as always, the Hotel de Londres y de Inglaterra will proudly join the Tamborrada with its own company, celebrating our heritage as a historic and iconic hotel. It’s an opportunity to honor the city that has embraced us with its beauty and hospitality, reaffirming our connection to Donostian culture and its remarkable surroundings.
The day concludes at 11:59 PM with the poignant ceremony of La Arriada. The mayor lowers the flag as the Sociedad Unión Artesana performs the San Sebastián March one final time, inviting representatives from each Tamborrada to share in this moving moment.
We warmly invite you to join us in celebrating this extraordinary day that holds deep significance for all Donostians.
¡Gora Donostia!
