Christmas in San Sebastián: 7 Ideas for Celebrating the Holidays
There are still a few weeks left before the most wonderful time of the year, but you can already see how businesses and other locations are starting to gear up for the holidays. If you plan to spend some of your Christmas holidays in San Sebastián, we’ll give you a few suggestions so you can make the most of your visit. Have you already decided to stay at our luxury hotel in San Sebastián, but you’re still not sure what activities you might like to do in the donostiarran capital? In this article we’ll suggest 7 great plans for a magical Christmas unlike any other.
1. Visit the Christmas Market
Every Christmas the Gran Mercado de Navidad is set up on the iconic Paseo Urumea in San Sebastián. Dozens of stands sell crafts and food, contributing the general festive atmosphere this time of year. If you’re looking to buy gifts, this is the place!
2. Admire the Christmas Lights
Another standout activity for those lucky enough to be in San Sebastián around Christmas is going to see the fantastic lights all around the city. Every year is different, and, impossible as it may seem, even more impressive than the year before. Make sure you see the lights on the María Cristina and Santa Catalina bridges, and don’t forget to visit el Palacio de Miramar and the Catedral del Buen Pastor as well to admire the statuesque Christmas trees there. The Plaza Cervantes is also a must with its enormous lighted sphere.
3. Watch the Cabalgata del Olentzero
In the Basque country, kids don’t wait for Santa Claus to come on Christmas Eve. Instead, they eagerly await the Olentzero. This traditional Christmas character leads a procession that takes place on the afternoon of Christmas Eve. Along with his inseparable companion Mari Domingi, he spreads wonder to all those present.
4. Don’t forget the nativity scene
Like the Christmas tree at the Catedral del Buen Pastor de Donostia, the nativity scene is a classic of the Christmas season. It is a beautiful outdoor creche located in Plaza Gipuzkoa that is certainly worth including in your Christmas activities.
5. See the Aurora Borealis
During the Christmas season there’s one activity that’s sure to pleas kids and adults. If you’ve never seen the northern lights, just head to the Mercado de San Martín, where you will see an ingenious lights show, complete with sound effects.
6. Run in the Carrera de San Silvestre 2019
Athletic types can sign up for another classic Christmas event: La Carrera de San Silvestre lets you finish out the year with a run of over 7km. And don’t forget your costume!
7. See the Procession of the Reyes Magos
Los Reyes Magos (the three wise men) don’t forget about San Sebastián, so don’t make plans for January 5th! If you’re wondering what a procession looks like in San Sebastián, make sure to bring a bag for candy. Every year they give away more than 2,000 kilos!
