Christmas: A Symphony of Traditions in San Sebastián
In every corner of San Sebastián, music takes centre stage at Christmas. From the twinkling lights of the Old Town to the beautiful La Concha promenade, Christmas carols fill the air, creating a special atmosphere that blends rich tradition with festive joy. As the Hotel de Londres y de Inglaterra, I’ve had the pleasure of welcoming choirs, musicians, and singers who, year after year, turn Christmas into an unforgettable experience. Here, where music is at the heart of every celebration, the sounds of tradition resonate throughout our city.
Music: A Living Legacy
In the Basque Country, music is much more than a melody; it’s a language that tells the story of our past, our values, and our heritage. San Sebastián, with its deep musical roots, celebrates this art form at every turn. From the concerts held daily at the Casino (now the Town Hall) in the early 20th century, to major events like Jazzaldia, the Quincena Musical and the Tamborrada, the city’s musical spirit continues to thrive, writing new chapters in its cultural history.
A Musical Christmas at the Hotel de Londres y de Inglaterra
Each year, I welcome Christmas alongside Olentzero and Mari Domingi, the iconic figures who make their final stop at my doorstep. On December 22nd, they’re greeted by the letters of wishes from excited children and the warm voices of the Orfeón Donostiarra school choir, a steadfast companion on many memorable evenings. This magical moment, paired with the lively dances of Eskola, marks the beginning of a holiday season filled with harmony and tradition.
On December 24th and 31st, music fills the hearts of my guests. On Christmas Eve, the A Tempo Choir travels through my main rooms and the promenade that connects my home with Villa Favorita, spreading carols and joy to passers-by. Later, on New Year’s Eve, the gentle sound of a harp and the sweet harmonies of the choir welcome my guests, reminding us that the most beautiful traditions are those sung in unison.
A Dream for Our City
From my privileged location overlooking La Concha bay, I dream of a day when San Sebastián will become a city that sings its Christmas in perfect harmony. My director, always loyal to our musical heritage, envisions a collective celebration of our roots, with voices uniting from every corner of the city – from the Old Town to the Peine del Viento – spreading joy and festive cheer to every neighbourhood, every local, and every visitor.
If you’re looking for a Christmas where music and tradition come together at every moment, I look forward to welcoming you to my home. Here, at the Hotel de Londres y de Inglaterra, the magic of Christmas comes to life through every note, every carol, and every smile.
